Faye Greene Holliday

d. November 17, 2021

“She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue” (Prov.  31:26). Faye Frances Greene Holliday was the embodiment of wisdom and kindness. She was loved by all and showed love to all. Faye joined her adoring husband, Larry, in heaven on Nov. 17, 2021, at the age of 84 (although she would say you never ask a lady her age).

Born on Oct. 13, 1937, in Concho, WV, Faye was the daughter of John Greene and Maude Atkins Greene, and sister to Gene Greene, Clayton Greene, and Frank Greene. She was the youngest by a large margin, and when Faye’s father passed away when she was only seven, her three brothers stepped up and took on the onus of caring for her and their mother. Those brothers were like fathers to Faye:  loving providers and life-long friends.

While most search for their calling for years, Faye learned hers early on, even before she graduated from Collins High School. At age 13, she began playing the piano in church, and this was the start of her ministry. Faye played the piano and then the organ in churches for close to 70 years. Not only did she fill the sanctuary with worshipful song, she also always made sure the musical talents of others were being used to glorify God. She provided this beautiful ministry at Calvary Baptist, Mt. Hope Temple, and at Oak Hill Baptist specifically for over 50 years.

It was at a reception for the Bishop at St. John’s Episcopal in Oak Hill where she met her soulmate, Larry E. Holliday. She was playing the organ that night, and afterward Larry mustered up the courage to talk to her. Pretending he was incredibly interested in the organ, Larry found his opportunity to chat with Faye and the connection was immediate. He knew instantly that she was good through and through. Shortly thereafter, they went on their first date to see My Fair Lady at a movie theater in Charleston. The total gentleman, Larry wooed Faye with visits and gifts and always included her mother. They married ten months after meeting and stayed happily married for over 54 years until Larry passed away in July 2021.

Faye and Larry resided in Oak Hill for their entire marriage. Not long before their 25th wedding anniversary, God wove into their lives two children - Rachel and Maddy Eells. The love and care they provided to these girls was beyond compare. There was no mother like Faye, no woman like Faye, no believer like Faye. Her fortitude in hard times came from the Lord. She lived out her beliefs. If anyone had a mustard seed of faith, it was certainly she.

Faye was preceded in death by her mother, father, three brothers, and husband, but her legacy lives on in her children and grandchildren. Surviving in her immediate family are Rachel Eells-Tom and her husband, Jason, of Round Hill, VA, and Madeline Eells Pearson and her husband, Jesse, of Huntington, WV, and two adoring grandchildren, Nyomi Tom and Jules Tom, who affectionately call her Nanny. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Margaret Greene Gray, Kathy Greene, Kathleen Holliday, Steven Greene, Kelvin Holliday, Stephen Holliday, Robert Holliday, and Brandon Holliday, and cousins, Margaret Harmon, Vanessa Walker, and Susan Woods.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to Oak Hill Baptist Church, 613 Lundale Drive, Oak Hill, WV 25901. Mrs. Holliday was enrolled in the Human Gift Registry for the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Lewisburg, WV. A memorial service for both Faye and Larry Holliday will be held at a later date.

Rachel and Maddy would like to thank many people, in particular her loving caregivers, our devoted prayer warriors, Faye’s amazing soul sisters, and the entire church family. Special thanks to Dr. Herbert Oye, longtime doctor and true friend to our Faye. Heartfelt thank you also to Dr. David Eells who followed the leading of the Holy Spirit when he placed his daughters in Faye and Larry’s incredible care. Dr. Eells is forever grateful, and so are Rachel and Maddy who will make their sincerest attempts at living up to her teachings.
