Retired Major Donald C. Kroening, 80, of Dothan, WV died on Sunday, July 26, 2009 at Hilltop Center in Hilltop, WV. Born July 08, 1929 at Jefferson, WI he was the son of the late Joseph and Agartha Machgan Kroening. His family moved to Bremerton, Washington in 1942 where he attended and graduated from high school. He then moved to Tacoma, WA in 1947 and attended college there. In September of 1948 Donald entered the US Army where he served for 18 years rising to the rank of Major in 1963. After retiring from the Army in 1966 he remained with the Department of Defense at the Pentagon as a civil servant with the Army until his retirement in 1989. His wife, Gladys Marie Smith Kroening and a sister, Beverly Nelson of Vancouver, WA preceded him in death. Survivors include son, Donald Richard Kroening of Dothan; sister, Joanne Clark of Tacoma, WA and by four nephews and two nieces. Services will be on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Pastor Lum Toney officiating. Burial will be at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Oak Hill with military graveside rites by VFW Post #3110 of Oak Hill. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Barry Smith, Stantion Smith, Jackie Smith, Lyle Aliff, Kristian Aliff and Shaun Aliff will serve as pallbearers. Online condolences may be sent at
