Dewey Sharkey Byrd , 78, of Ormond Beach, FL formerly of Oak Hill, WV died on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, FL. Born December 24, 1929 at Saxon, TN he was the son of the late James and Rosa Vester Byrd. He was a retired Tipple Foreman for Pittston Coal Company. Mr. Byrd was a graduate of Marsh Fork High School, was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Oak Hill and the Crossroads Baptist in Daytona Beach, FL. He served in the US Army 82nd Airborne during the Korean Conflict. Sharkey was an avid fisherman, hunter and bowler. He was preceded in death by his two sons, Gregory Dale Byrd and James Edward Byrd and a brother Ival Byrd. Survivors include wife, Ruth Ann Claypool Byrd; granddaughter, Briannan Katie Byrd of Richmond, VA, daughter-in-law, Jill Hershey of Richmond, VA and two sisters, Juanita Rutledge of Cleveland, OH and Virginia Soulsby of Virginia. Also surviving is his pride and joy, Princess Maggie Byrd, his toy poodle who worshiped him. Services will be on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at the Church of the Nazarene in Oak Hill with Pastor Jerry Bush officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill WV. Visitation will be held at the Oak Hill Church of the Nazarene on Friday, December 19, 2008 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Pallbearers will be Dave Smith, Gene Hershey, Mike Woodson, Tim Lacy, Juan Smarr and Ray Toler.
