On Wednesday, November 28, 2018 Del received her long awaited Heavenly reward at Harper Mills, Beckley surrounded by her family. No more pain, suffering, or sorrow. She fought a good fight, she finished her course, and she kept the faith. Well done thy good and faithful servant.
Born Delarene Frances Burgess on July 6, 1940 at Clear Creek, she was the daughter of the late Christopher Columbus and Nonearl (Miller) Burgess.
She was a graduate of Clear Fork High School and a member of St. Mary’s United Methodist Church. Del began her working career after her youngest daughter entered school. She was a cashier for Patton’s Market for 19 years and was a bookkeeper at Beckley Feed & Hardware. In her leisure she enjoyed attending her church, spoiling her grandchildren, and listening to Old Time Southern Gospel music.
In addition to her parents she is also preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Burgess Brookover and June Burgess Hunter; three brothers, Wilson, Thomas, and Sebert Burgess; and her mother-in-law and special friend, Eva C. Wood.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children David L. Wood, II and his wife, Christina of Mullens, Kim Taylor and her husband, Dr. Charles of Beckley, and Lori Aliff and her husband, Warren of Huntersville, NC; she was known as Grandma Del to her seven grandchildren, Jonathan Wood, Brianna Cook and her husband, Alvin, Eric Halstead, Luke Berry, Dylan Repass, Lindsey Berry, and Madison Wood; one great granddaughter, Kinsleigh Cook; and was known as Sissy to her siblings which include, Connie Maynor and her husband, Lonnie of Beckley, Raymond Miller of Mountain Home, ID, Russell Burgess and Mary Ann of Montcoal and Jimmy Burgess of Texas; two sister-in-laws, Lulabelle Burgess of Farmington, WV and Phyllis Burgess of Beckley; her last living aunt, Dealrene Pettry of Beckley; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1:00 P.M. Monday, December 3, 2018 at Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Mt. Hope with Gary Bowers officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley.
Friends may call one hour prior to services Monday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Eric Halstead, Luke Berry, Dylan Repass, Deion Johnson, Richard Burgess, and Bruce Blankenship.
