Dean M. Elkins

Our beloved husband, Dad, son and brother, Dean Morgan Elkins, peacefully passed away on Monday, March 28, 2011, following a courageous battle with ALS. Born on November 14, 1964, in Holden, WV, Dean was the son of Max Elkins of Oak Hill and the late Mary Elkins. He was also preceded in death by his brother Ricky Elkins and his maternal and paternal grandparents. Dean was a 1983 graduate of Oak Hill High School. Following high school he served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman at Ft. Riley in Kansas, receiving an honorable discharge of the rank of Corporal. Dean held the position of Lieutenant on the Oak Hill Volunteer Fire Department, where he was a member for 29 years. During this time he was honored as Fireman of the Year in 1989, was the recipient of the Fireline Officer of the Year award in 2007 & 2009, and recognized for his 25 years of service in 2007. Additionally, he was manager of Plateau Printing in Oak Hill, and a member of Scarbro United Methodist Church. In addition to his father, Dean is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Sheryl Hinte Elkins, their son Keith, sisters Jane Gaas and Sandy Kidd of Oak Hill, and Carla Elkins of Colorado, his father-in-law, Clifford Hinte and brother-in-law, Derryl Hinte of Oak Hill, his brothers from the Oak Hill Fire Department and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 1, 2011, at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral will be held on Saturday, April 2, at 1 p.m. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with the Rev. Michael Kessinger and Rev. Harry Fuller officiating. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens will full firefighter’s honors. Pallbearers will be members of the Oak Hill Volunteer Fire Department. In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to a special fund for his son, Keith c/o Sheryl Elkins at BB&T 101 Main Street, Oak Hill, WV 25901, or the Dean Elkins Community Service Scholarship Fund, c/o OHHS/CHS Alumni Association, P.O. Box 462, Oak Hill, WV 25901. The family would like to thank his wonderful caregivers, Judy Dix and Jeanna Moore, and the nurses of Hospice of Southern West Virginia, Chris, Stephanie and Angela for all their support and care of Dean.
