Curtiss William Martin, 64, of Mount Hope, WV passed into eternal life on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at Marietta Memorial Hospital, Marietta, Ohio. Curtis was diagnosed with lung cancer and had his lung removed in 1997. In the years since, he developed numerous health hurdles to over come stemming from his cancer. On Thursday, he finally succumbed to the earthly trials he faced with his family at his bedside. Born October 10, 1944 at Beckley, WV to Hermie Martin of Oak Hill, WV and the late Bernice Shaver Martin who passed away in 1998. Curtiss was a heavy equipment operator in the coal industry when he became disabled in 1997. Curtiss had many hobbies and interests. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and working puzzles. he also had a skill for making beautiful cabinets and other wood crafts. Besides his father, Hermie of Oak Hill, he is survived his his adoring wife and caretaker, Norma Jean Wells Martin, three daughters, Terry Lynn Bower and husband, Michael, Delisa Jean Pike and husband, Timmy, and Carla Mae Thompson and husband, Len, all of Mount Hope; one son, his "Baby Boy", Curtiss Martin, Jr. and wife, Karen of Danese. Seven grandchildren, Christina Bower of Florida, Robert Bower and his wife, Candice of Kileen, TX, Josh Bower of Prosperity, Cheryl Bower, Timmy Pike, Jr., Josh Pike and Christopher Thompson, all of Mount Hope. One precious great grandchild, Aubrie Ann Bower of Kileen, TX.; three brothers, Keith Martin, Ronnie Martin and wife, Kim of Oak Hill and Darrell Martin and wife, Mae of St. Mary's; mother in-law, Wandalene Gunter and husband, Fred of Piney View. Also left to cherish Curtiss' memory are his church family, a host of fiends and extended family. His furry friends, Rat and Giz will miss him too! Curtiss was a Christian man witnessing to others every chance he could. He attended the Sprague Free Will Baptist Church. He was a good example for those around him showing kindness to all. Those who knew him were truly blessed by his presence. With each of his health struggles he always looked to the Lord to see him through and appreciated all his blessings. Visitation with the family will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope on Sunday evening, August 30, 2009 from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Services to honor his life will be held on Monday, August 31, 2009 at 2:00 P. M. at the Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope with Pastor "Preacher" Fred Lovell officiating. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Gardens, Pea Ridge Road, Oak Hill. Pallbearers will be Keith Martin, Ronnie Martin, Robert Bower, Josh Bower, Josh Pike and Chris Thompson. The family wished to thank all of those who took time to visit, send a note of encouragement, called or prayed for Curtiss especially over the past few months.
