Our beloved Clifford Duke Ramsey , 82, of Oak Hill, WV passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV, of a sudden illness.
Born September 19, 1933 at Beckley, WV he was the son of the late Fred and Margie Ballard Ramsey.
He attended Woodrow Wilson High School, graduating in 1951. As proud US Army veteran, he served during the Korean War, which is where he learned his skills in computers.
Duke married Patricia Y. Ramsey on August 10, 1957, and they raised two sons, Clifford and Matthew. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary in 2015. Duke's first jobs were in Cincinnati, OH, where he worked for IBM, and later, the Mead Corporation. After ten years there he took a job in Charleston in 1964. He worked for the WV state government for 25 years, retiring from the Department of Employment Security and moving to Oak Hill in 1994.
A happy man who always had a smile on his face, Duke loved his church, his family, friends and was a life-long volunteer. He loved helping others, and in Charleston volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Ronald McDonald House. After retiring to Oak Hill he did volunteer work at Raleigh General Hospital, Red Cross, Lion's Club, Plateau Club, Oak Hill Beautification Committee, county Zoning Board, and the Backpack Ministry.
He was a twenty-five year member of the Oak Hill Methodist Church where he served on many committees and was an usher.
As the last surviving member of his immediate family he was preceded in death by sisters, Laura Lou (Sid Doherty) and Marianne (John Gates) and brothers, Fred and James Robert.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Pat; sons, Cliff of Oak Hill and Matt of Portsmouth, RI; and many nieces and nephews.
Following Duke's wishes, he will be cremated. A memorial service will be on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at the Oak Hill United Methodist Church with Dr. Charles Miller officiating.
