Clarence G. Herndon, 86, of Fayetteville, WV died Saturday, August 13, 2005 at his home following an extended illness resulting from congestive heart failure. He was born May 25, 1919 at Lookout, WV, son of the late William Robert and Huldah Boyd Herndon. Clarence grew up in Oak Hill. His beloved wife of 60 years, Mildred Legg Herndon; one brother, Milton T. Herndon of Charleston, WV and ten nieces and nephews survive him. Clarence will be greatly missed by all. He was preceded in death by one sister, Eunice M. Herndon and two brothers, Robert B. Herndon and William L. Herndon. He graduated from Oak Hill High School, the Charleston School of Commerce with a degree in accounting and the University of Wisconsin Banking School. During World War II he served with distinction in the US Army 97th Infantry Division under General George Patton in France, Germany and Czechoslovakia. After the war in Europe ended, he came home on a 30 day furlough, married Mildred Legg, and was then shipped to the Pacific Theater where he was a member of the occupation forces in Japan. Mr. Herndon was employed at Merchants and Miners National for 41 years retirinh in 1981 as vice president in charge of loans. He was also a director of Merchants and Miners National Bank in Oak Hill a director of Bank One in Beckley. He was a member of the Oak Hill Lions Club, White Oak Country Club, Oak Hill Baptist Church and Shirley Donnelly Sunday school class. He was an avid golfer and collector of coins, railroad, and coal camp memorabilia. He served for many years as the faithful treasurer of the Herndon-Bragg reunion. Friends may call from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday, August 15, 2005, at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill, WV. Services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 16, 2005, at the Oak Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. David White officiating. Burial will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with military rites by the Post #3110, VFW, Oak Hill.
