Charles R. "Jake" Payne

Charles "Jake" Redon Payne , 90, of Dothan, WV died on Monday, January 03, 2011 at Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley, WV. Born October 04, 1920 at Dothan, WV he was the son of the late Charles Rankin and Della Beatrice Toney Payne. Jake was a 1941 graduate of Oak Hill High School. He was a World War II US Army veteran having served in the Pacific Theatre for four years. A coal miner, Mr. Payne worked at New River Company's Oakwood Mine and retired from Riverton Coal at Krebs. He was a member of the UMWA, N.R.A. and the American Legion. He loved to fish, hunt and bowl and was a Yankees fan but what he loved more than those things was being the #1 fan for his great-grandchildren's Little League teams. His loving wife of 57 years, Betty Ruth Painter Payne, son-in-law, Arlie Gene Coleman, sister, Betty Jane Payne O'Dell and a brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Ruby Payne preceded him in death. Survivors include his only daughter, Joan Payne Coleman of Dothan, brother, Woodrow Payne and wife, Mary Lou of Dothan, granddaughter, Kelly Coleman Adkins and husband, Kenny of Scarbro and great grandchildren, Wyatt Adkins and and his little motivator, Madison Adkins. Also surviving are many close nieces, nephews and cousins as well as his caregivers, Brenda Rogers and Janie Wingrove. Funeral services will be on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Rev. Lum Toney and Rev. Darrell Fuller officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park., Oak Hill with military graveside rites by Oak Hill VFW Post #3110. Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
