Charles "Darby" Henry McQuade

On Friday, September 6, 2024, Charles Henry "Darby" McQuade, founder of Jackalope Pottery, passed away at the age of 81 after over a decade long battle against Alzheimer's. Charles known affectionately by many as Darby was born in Logan County, West Virginia on October 17, 1942 to Joe and Marian McQuade, the fifth eldest of fifteen children. 

He earned his Bachelor's and Master's in Economics from the West Virginia University. After leaving the cubicles of Wall Street, Darby established Jackalope Pottery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, 1976, earning the state's Small business Person of the Year multiple times. 

Darby will be remembered for his generosity, traveling adventures, keen eye, and a passion for animals. He loved gardening, chili dogs, and Bluegrass. He cared deeply about the communities in which lived and worked and fought to make them better. It was important to him that people had fun! He was social, optimistic, fearless, and a complete original. 

In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his siblings, Dona Jo, Joel, Patricia, Robbie, Mary, and Margaret. 

Darby is survived by his former wife, Elida Saucedo; son, Brooks Saucedo- McQuade; his siblings, Shirley, Dan, Tom, David, Ruth, George, Michael, and Kathleen. 

Services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 21, 2024 at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill. 

Friends may call one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home. 

A memorial service will be held in Santa Fe, NM in October. 

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to the Alzheimer's Association.
