Bynum "Junior" Gilbert, Jr.

Lovingly known as Junior to his family and friends, Bynum "Junior" Gilbert, Jr., 82, of Kincaid, WV passed away on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at CAMC - Memorial Division in Charleston, WV. Born May 08, 1924 at Princeton, WV he was the son of the late Bynum Lafayette and Dolly McMillion Gilbert. Mr. Gilbert was a life-long resident of the Robson-Kincaid areas. He enrolled in the C.C.C. in 1941 at the age of 17. Following this he served as a Seaman 1st Class in the US Navy during World War II on the SS James Monroe and the SS Horseshoe. He was also a member of the Navy's elite Armed Guard Unit. After crossing the equator on November 30, 1944, he became a member of the Ancient Order of the Deep. Junior was a retired coal miner with 27 years service and member of U.M.W.A District 17. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, trapper, ginseng hunter, wildflower gatherer and fisherman. He was a beloved member of the Page Baptist Church where he taught the Men's Bible Class. As a mentor to the younger generation, he always took the time to patiently answer questions and teach by experience. A son, Dallas W. Royce preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Alma Pearl Clay Gilbert; son Leroy Gilbert and wife, Vicky of Lochgelly, WV; three daughters, Janice Harper, Stg. Major US Army Retired and husband, Danny Ray of Houston, TX, Rose Anne Michaels and husband, Albert of Kanawha City, WV and Cindy Lilly and husband, Earl of Hilltop, WV; a daughter-in-law, Jean Royce of Lewisburg, WV; a sister, Mildred Jane Predojev of South Carolina and a brother, Ira Lee Gilbert of North Augusta, SC. He was blessed with the love of many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill on Friday, April 27, 2007, from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Services will be on Saturday, April 28, 2007 at 1:00 P.M. at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill with Rev. Delmas Wolfe officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill WV with military graveside rites by VFW Post #3110, Oak Hill. Men of the Page Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers.
