Beatrice Wykle Hamilton, 93, of Beckley passed away Saturday July 23, 2016 at Hilltop Center in Hilltop, WV.
Born January 17,1923 in Sanger, WV the fourth of six children of the late Homer and Mary Elizabeth Wykle. She grew up on a farm near Oak Hill and attended Sanger Elementary School. During World War II she served the war effort as a Rosie by working for Triumph Industries a U.S. Army and Navy munitions factory in Maryland. There she worked with other young women in one of the more dangerous jobs of loading the detonators for many types of Army and Navy munitions. She and many of her co-workers were awarded the coveted Army and Navy “E” award during a ceremony at the factory by Admiral Hussey.
In March of 2012 she was among man WV Rosies who were interviewed by the NBC Today Show in a taping in the Old Charleston WV Ordinance Center.
Returning to WV after the war she married the young man she knew from her childhood O'Dell Hamilton.
She worked with her husband to operate a grocery store in Sanger and also served as Postmaster for the Sanger Post Office. During these same years she and her husband operated Oak Hill Ice Company. Later she worked as Assistant Postmaster at Harvey, WV and other local post offices through the years.
Long time member of the Harvey Methodist Church where she taught a children's Sunday School Class.
After being a devoted housewife for many years she served the Oak Hill Senior Citizens Center as a RSVP Transport van driver.
After he husband died she moved back to Oak Hill where she enjoyed retirement. After moving to Oak Hill she attended Calvary Baptist Church where she made many friends.
In 2005 after an illness, she made her home in Beckley.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband O'Dell Hamilton, three sisters; Mabell Murdock, Evelena Jenson, Beulah Patrick, and two brothers; William “Bill” Wykle, and Manual Wykle.
She is survived by her son, Scott M. Hamilton and his wife Carolyn of Beckley, two granddaughters; Rachel Hamilton, and Amanda Hamilton both of Morgantown, WV. She is further survived by nieces, and nephews and many friends.
Funeral service will be 11:00am Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill with Pastor Vondie Cook officiating. Burial will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park Oak Hill.
Visitation for friends will be one hour prior to service at Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill.
Friends and Family will serve as pallbearers.
