Beatrice Virginia Smith Burgess, Oak Hill, WV, passed away Monday, April 5, 2004 at Holzer Senior Care Center in Gallipolis, OH. She was born June 1, 1913, in Wingrove, WV, the daughter of the late Henry Edward Smith and Emma Catherine Beasley Smith. Mrs. Burgess was a member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church, the Challengers, a former member of the Civic League, GFWC, (where she won many district and state awards for her needlework), affiliated with the Girl Scouts of America, an active member in the Republican Woman's Club and a member of Oak Hill Chapter # 107, OES. She was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 1967. She was preceded in death by her husband William R. Burgess; brothers Cecil J. Smith, Russell L. Smith, Roy F. Smith, Clarence D. Smith, Howard K. Smith, Henry E. Smith, Ernest F. Smith; sisters Myrtle P. Smith Gross and Emma C. "Dolly" Smith Wells; and grandson Christopher C. Moss. She is survived by her brothers Emerson Smith of Princeton, WV and Robert Smith of Nitro, WV, her sons, Bennett R. Burgess and wife, Jean, of St. Albans, WV, and William E. Burgess and wife, Carolyn, of Lexington, KY; her daughters Gail Smith and husband, Glenn, of Gallipolis, OH, and Kathy Moss and husband, Steve, of Oak Hill, WV; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-six great- grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held Friday, April 9, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Oak Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. James Shepherd and Rev. William Slates officiating. Burial will follow at High Lawn Memorial Park in Oak Hill, WV. Friends may call Thursday, April 8, 2004, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Tyree's Funeral Home in Oak Hill, WV and one hour before the service on Friday at the church. Pallbearers will be Edward Burgess, Dan Burgess, David Smith, Michael Smith, Robert Burgess, Jeff Brady, Chris Baer, and Eric Chaney. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio, 44720. The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Holzer Senior Care Center.
