Basil Ross Sweeney , 87, of Beckley, WV passed away on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, WV. Born August 13, 1926 at Sweeneysburg, WV he was the son of the late Charles A. and Eliza Tyree Sweeney. Basil was employed by the state of WV Department of Veterans Affairs and retired from the Department of Environmental Protection. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School class of 1945. Mr. Sweeney was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Beckley where he served as trustee, usher and President of the Pathfinders Sunday school class. He volunteered at Helping Hands and was a World War II US Army veteran, a product of the greatest generation. He was a lifetime member of the Moose and 50 plus year member of the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his infant twin sons, Charles and Clinton; and as the last surviving member of his immediate family by brothers, Edra, Cecil, Grady, Dorsey, Ira and Ray and sister, Gustava.. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Maxine (Mickey) Sweeney; daughter, Carolyn (David) Earehart; son, Larry (Linda) Sweeney; five grandchildren, Amy Earehart Key, Carrie Earehart, Donley Sweeney, Shawn Sweeney and Jack Sweeney; great granddaughter, Camryn Key and sister-in-law, Loretta Sweeney. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at Tyree Funeral Home Mount Hope in Mount Hope. with Rev. Rick Waller officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park., Beckley, WV. Visitation will be held at Tyree Funeral Home, Mount Hope on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to First United Methodist Church, 217 Heber Street, Beckley WV 25801.
