Arlie A. Smith

April 30, 1916 — February 10, 2010

Arlie A. Smith, born April 30, 1916 went home to be with the Heavenly Father on February 5, 2010. Preceding him to the Heavenly Father was his father, William “Bill Henry” Smith and mother, Ruthie Payne Smith, five brothers, Jack, William, Johnny, Artie “Joe” and Ira Smith and also six sisters, Nettie, Martha, Mary, Emma, Barbara, Veda. Surviving are his wife, Lura Toney Smith and two daughters, Brenda Smith Goins and her husband Roger Goins, Kay Smith Bigelow all of Oak Hill area. He is survived by four grandchildren, Jon Brian Goins and his wife Belinda, Dawn Elaine Goins, Thomas and Jeremiah Layne Goins of Oak Hill. Also James “Jamie” Bigelow and wife Sherry of Hiton, NY. Also three great grandchildren, Chasity Dawn Thomas, Zachary Bruce Thomas and Jacob Heath Thomas all of Oak Hill area. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Arlie was a WWII veteran serving his country in the 1st Army of the United States Army. He served from April 1942 to the duration serving through five major battle from the Invasion of Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he returned home to raise his family by contracting timber for the local mines. After his retirement he enjoyed hunting, gardening and being with his family. He will be missed by all who know this great man and was the last surviving member of his brothers and sisters. Arlie attended the Lifebridge Assembly of God in Oak Hill. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at the Tyree Funeral Home Chapel, Oak Hill with Rev. Lum Toney officiating. Burial will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill with military graveside rites conducted by Oak Hill VFW Post 3110. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Wednesday. Family members will serve as pallbearers. Online condolences may be sent to www.tyreefuneralhome.com .
