Well done good and faithful servant. Lawrence C. Wood , 90, of Oak Hill, WV went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, November 24, 2016 at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV.
Born January 09, 1926 at Page, WV he was the son of the late John William Wood, Sr. and Ruth Marie Hall Wood.
Lawrence graduated from Montgomery High School in 1944 and enlisted in the US Army, serving in the 94th Infantry Division of the Third Army in Germany and Czechoslovakia during World War II. Following the war he was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany, with the Occupation Forces. In 1958 he became a route salesman for the Jewel Tea Company, later the Jewel Homeshopping Service, retiring in 1985. For several years he owned and directed the Kate Boone Nursing Home.
A man of great personal faith in God, he lived it each day of his life. He was a very active member at the Jones Avenue First Church of God: serving as song leader, choir director, and Sunday school teacher for many years. Singing was his passion. As a member of the Singtime Quartet he enjoyed traveling to and singing in various churches for over 50 years.
He always appreciated a good joke, and was known for his unflagging optimism and upbeat personality. Lawrence's motto was "Make it a great day" and he shared this with everyone he met.
Brothers, Robert Wood and John William Wood; and sisters, Kathleen Shyblosky and Patricia Sullivan preceded him in death.
On January 25, 1974 Lawrence married Carrie Evelyn Claypool Smith, who survives him. He is also survived by daughters, Pamela Channell and husband, Don, of Belington and Melody McClung and fiancé', Fred Keefer of Beckley; stepsons, Donald Smith and wife, Cathy, of Roanoke, VA and David Smith and wife, Heather, of Winchester, VA; as well as four grandchildren, Shelly Thomas, Larry Whitmore, Stephanie Hankins and Josh Rice; five step-grandchildren, Zachary, Sydney, Elijah, Peyton and Colin; and five great grandchildren, Hailey, Madison, Natalee, Lauren and Lance.
Other family members surviving are sister, Betty White; sisters-in-law, Edith Wood and Hazel Wood; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at 3:00 PM at Jones Avenue First Church of God in Oak Hill with Pastor Vondie Cook and Rev. Patricia Franklin officiating. Entombment will be at High Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, Oak Hill. Friends may call from 1:00 PM until service time on Sunday at the church.
